ask first
Do I need to own a motorcycle to learn?
No. Training motorcycles are provided in the basic course, so most people take a class before they buy anything. Check whether your course wants you to bring your own helmet.
Do I need a permit before the class?
According to New Jersey's motorcycle safety program, you don't need a learner's permit before taking the basic course.
I've never driven anything with a clutch. Can I still learn?
Yes. The beginner course starts with the clutch, at walking speed, on a closed range. Many students have never used a manual transmission.
Am I too old to start?
People start riding at every age. What matters is being comfortable on a bike that suits you and learning the skills properly.
What happens if I drop the bike in class?
It happens, usually at walking speed. Training bikes are built for it, and instructors coach you through it.
How long until I can ride on my own?
A basic course runs over a couple of days. After that you get your endorsement, then build experience on quiet roads at your own pace.
When is riding season in North Jersey?
Spring through fall is the main season, and early fall is many riders' favorite time to ride. Some riders keep going on dry winter days with heated gear.
