Dress for
the ride

Riders call it ATGATT: all the gear, all the time. Good gear keeps you safer and makes the ride more comfortable.

Helmet

Get it fitted, because fit matters more than price. Look for the DOT label. New Jersey law requires helmets for all riders. A full-face helmet protects your chin and face as well.

Riding jacket

Abrasion-resistant leather or textile, with armor at the shoulders and elbows. Vented jackets make summer riding comfortable.

Gloves

Full-fingered, with palm protection. When people fall, their hands hit the ground first.

Feet

Boots

Over the ankle, with stiff soles and no laces that can catch on the bike.

Legs

Riding pants

Riding jeans with armor, or textile overpants. Ordinary denim gives very little abrasion protection.

Eyes

Eye protection

A face shield or riding glasses. A bug or a pebble at speed is no joke.

Ears

Earplugs

Wind noise at highway speed is loud enough to tire you out over a long ride. Foam plugs cost almost nothing.

Visibility

Bright colors

Light or high-visibility colors on your helmet and jacket help drivers see you.

Where to start

Helmet first, then work outward

If your budget is tight, spend it on the helmet and gloves, then add the jacket, boots and pants. Try everything on in person. Gear that fits well gets worn.
